Picture Hooks Conference with Association of Illustrators & Manchester Met
Saturday 20th May 2017
Picture Hooks presents its annual conference for illustrators, now in its fourth year, with the Association of Illustrators and Manchester School of Art.
This is a great opportunity for emerging illustrators and graduates to get an insider's view into the picture book industry and other commercial opportunities, with illuminating talks from leading publishing experts and agents.
We are joined this year by Tessa Strickland, the co-founder of Barefoot Books, and Tiffany Leeson, the Creative Director of Egmont Publishing. The AOI will present a special edition of the hugely popular series AOI Discusses: Making More Money. Illustrators will share their experiences and offer practical tips around contracts, negotiation and the awkwardness of pricing your work, with lots of time for Q&A.
Further speakers to be confirmed.
Lunch will be provided at the venue, but please note that it is not included in the ticket price.
IF YOU PURCHASE AN AOI MEMBER OR STUDENT TICKET, PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING PROOF OF ID (E.G. STUDENT CARD, RECEIPT FOR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FEE) TO THE EVENT. IF YOU DO NOT BRING PROOF OF ID, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO PAY THE DIFFERENCE FOR GENERAL ADMISSION.
ABOUT THE ORGANISERS
Picture Hooks started six years ago when literary agent Lucy Juckes and picture book author Vivian French noticed that there were lots of courses and opportunities for writers, but nothing for illustrators. They set up a scheme to provide support, through a conference and mentoring scheme, master classes, and portfolio surgeries, and also to raise the profile of illustration.
The AOI supports illustrators at every stage of their career with friendly, relevant professional advice as well as undertaking vital campaigning work to ensure a sustainable, inspirational future for creators. The AOI has a thriving community of members at every stage of their career across the UK and overseas who enjoy exclusive insights and resources supporting their careers. The AOI also present the World Illustration Awards (the UKs only jury selected international illustration competition), host the UKs most mature portfolio resource and publish the illustration journal Varoom.
The Manchester School of Art is the second oldest art school in the UK and also one of the largest providers of art and design courses. Graduates include Sarah Burton OBE, L.S. Lowry, Julie Walters, and Steve Coogan.
