The Manchester Children’s Book Festival welcomes everyone to the 2017 Family Fun Day - a full Saturday of free activities at the Manchester Metropolitan University All Saints Campus. Come along and join the fun – there’ll be something for everyone, from pre-readers and nursery age-children to teens and families.

This year's Family Fun Day will be bigger and better than ever with tons of free stuff to do in the Family Arts Network Zone...

Much-loved author Cathy Cassidy will be sharing Love From Lexie, her first book from her new series. Knitbone Pepper and author/illustrator duo Claire Barker and Ross Collins will share their funny pet stories.

Join Nick Butterworth, award-winning children’s author and creator of hit CBeebies series Q Pootle 5, for an amazing interactive show about the magic of storytelling and imagination.

Guy Bass’ high-octant performance will explore his childhood aspirations and inspirations and will includes animated readings from his books. Join him for an interactive (and active!) combination of stand-up, reading, pictures and props.

There will also be other authors and illustrators, arts and crafts, workshops, a multi-sensory storytelling room, illustration exhibition, green screen, face painting, dressing up and much more. Get musical with Masha and The Bear, or dramatic with the Royal Exchange Theatre. Make designer footballs with the National Football Museum, or try out the Green Screen with Archives+.

Everything is interactive and there is something for all ages and interests provided courtesy of Manchester’s Family venues.

Generation Manchester and Science Zone...

There are more free things to try in this zone for older children and teens. Try your hand at beatboxing with world record holder Testament and hear from authors including Guy Bass. Explore the Lake District with Virtual Reality, interact with the poetry showcase and find out how Augmented and Virtual Reality works. Create your own comic strip, explore the stars, visit the inflatable Manchester Museum and join in hands-on science and art activities.

Read Manchester Zone...

Our outdoor performance tent will be filled with drop-in sessions throughout the day. As well as a special performance of the Three Little Pigs and a guest appearance by Coronation Street star Jennie McAlpine, poets and authors, including Jane Kerr, Mandy Coe and Chrissie Gittins will be in the tent throughout the day.

Join in craft and musical activities, take part in the Elephant Hunt and find out more about all the fantastic Summer Reading Challenge, the Book Bench Trail and the Stanley Grove Bigger Book Bash.

GRUB Food Market Zone...

With so much to do, you’re bound to get peckish. Our friends at GRUB, are setting up a food-market to keep your energy levels up. Have a picnic in the park while the younger ones burn off their energy on the assault course or the bouncy castle, or play on the many outdoor activities available. They might even pick up some circus tricks.

Get a selfie with Q Pootle 5, come as your favourite book character, do some pavement art, have a go at being a circus performer.

There is something for everyone and books everywhere, thanks to our booksellers Blackwell's and Usborne.

Support your festival

We try to make as much as possible on the Family Fun Day free so that everyone can take part. To enable us to continue to do this, we ask those who can afford it to make a donation – either when booking your tickets, or on the day.
